The ‘How I learned to love the bomb’ quiz

August 22nd, 2009 by comfortably (and technically) dumb 11 comments »

Here’s this week’s quiz on weapons, war and military. Hope you’ll like it

1. While begun for practical reasons of identifying friendly units, the practice (observed mainly in the US) evolved to express the individuality often constrained by the uniformity of the military, to evoke memories of home and peacetime life, and as a kind of psychological protection against the stresses of war and the probability of death. The appeal, in part, came from it not being officially approved, even when the regulations against it were not enforced. Because of its individual and unofficial nature, it is considered folk art, inseparable from work as well as representative of a group. What?

Answer: Nose Art on Aeroplanes. The sentences in the questions were lifted directly from wikipedia :)

2. The still images captured by a gun camera in 1971 shows an incident (first of many to follow) that helped A earn the nickname B-C (B shown in pic). What are A and B-C?

Guncam

Answer: A -> HAL Ajeet, a modified and improved variant of Folland Gnat. It managed to destroy the technically superior Canadian Sabre owned by Pakistan and hence got the nickname Sabre-Slayer.
The battle, of course, is The Battle of Boyra
I’m awarding points to anyone who’s mentioned Sabre in his answer

3. What’s so special about the two helicopters?

Mi-24_Iraqi

AH-1_SuperCobra,_Al_Asad_Air_Base_(2164256645)

Answer: The two helicopters involved in the only air-to-air helicopter battle in history. Happened during the Iran Iraq war

Only Chandrakanth and Carumbaiah got it right. Super job

6. Who it is?

Military 6

Historians and researchers remain divided over the kind of impact he had and the way he influenced his country. He has been called a military genius for his reforms and innovations, and condemned for the brutality of his reign.

Answer: King Shaka or Saka. Cracked by everyone

7. After the United Kingdom declared war in 1939, actor David Niven joined the Army. He was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade on 25 February 1940, and was assigned to a motor training battalion and later transferred into the Commandos. During his war service who served as his batman?

Four years later one of the commanders of the Mexican troupes asked for it to be returned. When the initial request was refused, about a 100 dragoons were sent to the place to retrieve the cannon. But to no avail. What came out as a result of this incident?

Answer: ONly Achaiah Carumbaiah (sorry, got confused :P ) got what I wanted Aaargh.. Both got it right, infact. It’s the “Come and take it” flag used during the Texas Revolution, before being replaced by the yellow and blue bonnie blue flag.
Full points for Texas Revolution as well

10. One of these don’t belong to the group. Which? Why? And it’s a little more than the most obvious answer

Military 10 e

Military 10

Military 10 b

The question is a “word/phrases origin” kinda question
Ok the odd one out is Number – 4
How? All the others words/phrases are borrowed from military but now used only outside it’s realms. Only last one has been borrowed into Military.

i -> Hearing through the grapevine
The term “hearing through the grapevine” can be traced to American Civil War days when vinelike telegraph wires were strung from tree to tree across battlefields and used by Army Intelligence. The messages that came over these lines were often so confusing or inaccurate that soon any rumor was said to come from the grapevine.

ii -> Freelance (this particular one is from Dr.No) – It used to be referred to a mercenary who wouldn’t mind killing for any party as long as he got his money. (Free and Lance)

iii Operation Crossroad at Bikini Atoll. The modern bikini was invented by French engineer Louis Réard in 1946. He named it after Bikini Atoll in the Pacific, the site of the Operation Crossroads nuclear weapon tests in July that year. The reasoning was that the burst of excitement created by it would be like a nuclear device.

iv The bird lent it’s name to the weapon, Sniper

Scores:
Chandrakant – 7
Kamal Rathi – 6
Carumbaiah – 5.5
Appu – 5.5
Mayura – 5
Achaiah – 4
Rithwik – 2

Answers to Fictional Bands quiz

August 22nd, 2009 by comfortably (and technically) dumb 2 comments »

Let’s begin
1. I’ll start with my all time favourite fictional band. They are a struggling three member rock band. Struggling not just to cut a record deal, but to make both ends meet as well. They sneak into a near by music shop at night to practise as they don’t even own their own instruments. Till date the band has managed to write two songs. Both are made up of one word each. Phonetically, the words in one song sung backwards give you the words for the other. ID the band?

Answer: Bombay Boys.
From the movie of the same name. Kaizad Gustad’s directorial debut.
Highly recommended. It’s one of those “it’s so bad it’s good” kinda movies (watch the clip). Though it had a pretty good story and excellent music and ensemble cast, it’s technical shortcomings did it in.

2. Simple and Easy- ID the band

Answer: The Soggy Bottom Boys from O Brother Where Art Thou. One of Coen Brothers’ lesser known movies. I personally think it’s a very underrated movie.

3. This violinist X is supposed to have sold his soul to the devil, or atleast that’s what the people who saw him play believed. The video below shows a famous composition of X being played by some Chinese violinist. Tell me how is this piece of music relevant in this quiz. Bonus point for identifying X.

Answer: X is Nicolas Paganini. The piece is his Caprice No.5
This piece is played in the famous guitar duel between Eugene Marton and Jack Butler (Ralph Machio and Steve Vai respectively) in the climax of the movie Crossroads. The original guitar for both of them was by Steve Vai.
Watch the video on youtube

4. Connect. Bonus point if you can Identify all the bands/Artists
FB5a

FB5b

FB5c

Answer: Fictional bands/Artist from tv shows who became real bands/artist
Third pic is Hanna Montana who began releasing records under real name Miley Cyrus
Second pic – Worthless Peons from Scrubs became The Blanks
First pic – The Monkees from The Monkees
This is by no means an exhaustive list

5. This yet to be released movie is about a band that, in a bid to seek shortcut ways to make it to the top, ends up committing one crime after another. The inspiration for this movie came in part from a real band who went by the name Greek when the movie was made with whom the director lived when he first began his career. Just name the fictional band.

Answer: Parasites from Anurag Kashyap’s directorial debut Paanch which is yet to see the light of day. Completed in 2000 this highly anticipated movie ran into various roadblocks and still remains unreleased excpet being screened in a couple of Film Festivals. The music in this movie makes the band Magik look like a bunch of high school wannabe rockstars cucumber sandwich. Check out a song from the movie here

6. Three members of this band went on to form a real soooper famous band. Id the soooper famous band
FB6

Answer: Pearl Jam
This fictional band called Citizen Dick appears in Cameron Crowe’s movie Singles. This movie was made when members of Pearl Jam were part of Mookey Blaylock and still trying to make a mark in Seattle. The photograph shows Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, and Eddie Vedder with Matt Dillon.
The movie also features Chris Cornell and Alice in Chains as members of different Fictional Groups.

7. Sitter. Metallica has done it, so has AC DC, Status Quo, Jay Z and Velvet Underground. But this band claims to have started the trend. And the band did it parodying an album released by another super famous group. Name both the bands in question.

Answer: Spinal Tap’s Black Album (fully black cd cover) parodying Beatles’ White Album

8. X(a real band) was formed in 1986 at San Marcos High School just outside of Santa Barbara, California, when singer/songwriter Glen Phillips was only 14 and a freshman; the other members were 17 and juniors. The band drew its name from the Eric Idle monologue “Rock Notes” on Monty Python’s Contractual Obligation Album from 1980, although the name is featured in a parody of The Old Grey Whistle Test on Rutland Weekend Television in 1975. Identify X.

Answer: Toad the wet sprocket

9. National Lampoon off Broadway hit play “Lemmings” featured a parody heavy metal band X. The play itself was a parody of the Woddstock Festival. Some beleive that this band was the inspiration behind a certain real band naming itself Y. What are X and Y?

Answer: X – Megadeath, Y – Megadeth

10. Identify. Why are they featured in this quiz?
FB10

Answer: Quoting Ashwini – Porcupine tree!! it started off as a hoax. steve wilson and malcolm formed a fictional band named the same and fabricated stories.. and finally did come up with truly amazing music as evidence.
Correctamundo!
Check them out, they’re amazing

11. This is the only fictional air band I know of. Identify

Answer: Cool Cats again from Scrubs

Well, I thought the quiz was pretty workoutable. I mean, how many fictional bands has Matt Dillon been part of? or George Clooney and John Turturro, for that matter.

Only two responded :( Ashwini – 5 and Carumbaiah – 3. Great work folks!!

Stay tuned for this week’s quiz on War, weapons and military. Will post it in about an hour and a half.
Scores for the whole week will be updated soon
