Well, here’s the prelims of the first wekuiz(live/real time quiz) of 2009-10 season held last Saturday and conducted by Ashwini. Finals will be posted tomorrow.
And twas a Movies and Music quiz..

1) His children are named Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen. For some strange reason, several biologists have honored him by naming new discoveries after him. These include an extinct mollusc, a genus of gobiid fishes,a jellyfish, a Cameroonese spider(because “the ventral side of the abdomen of the female of this species strikingly resembles the artist’s legendary moustache”.).. and many more. He has been one of the most prolific artists singing, making movies, composing jingles and what not. He used to call steve vai his “little italian virtuoso”. Who?

2) Had to have a question on pulp fiction.. what is the kurt cobain-courtney love connection to the movie?

3) This composition was for or inspired by a girl, whose name is not _____. In fact, as far as most historians can tell, Beethoven didn’t know anyone by that name.Instead, the song was originally titled “Bagatelle in A minor” based on some handwritten notation a Beethoven researcher claimed to have seen on a now-lost copy of the sheet music. Beethoven had hideous handwriting—to the point that some scholars speculate the song was actually written “for Therese,” as in Therese Malfatti, one of several women who turned down a marriage proposal from the notoriously lovesick maestro. The composition?

4) Together with Charlie Parker, he was a major figure in the development of bebop and modern jazz. He taught and influenced many other musicians, including trumpeters Miles Davis. In 1964 the artist put himself forward as a presidential candidate. He promised that if he were elected, the White House would be renamed “The Blues House,” and a cabinet composed of Duke Ellington, (Secretary of State); Miles Davis, (Director of the CIA) Ray Charles, (Librarian of Congress); Louis Armstrong, (Secretary of Agriculture) His autobiography is called ‘To Be or Not to Bop’.He is often called the Bahá’í Jazz Ambassador. yaaru?

5) Connect star wars, jaws, fiddler on the roof, schindler’s list, close encounters of the third kind. Why would close encounters be the odd one out?

6) After her husband dies, ____ raises her son by herself and raises him to believe that women were evil and slutty, unless they were mothers. The two of them became totally wrapped up in their own world. Then, mommy dearest meets a guy and decided to remarry; The son gets so jealous that he ends up killing them both and making it look like a suicide. Obviously he was a little warped after that and starts sharing half of his brain with her persona, and a series of unfortunate events ensue. who?

7) The group has been a huge influence on the seattle grunge scene. Few people know that our man, kurt cobain actually tried out to play bass in the group but failed(!?) cuz he was too nervous and forgot all the songs. Aside from bands in the grunge scene, they have influenced a lot of other bands, including Tool, Crowbar, Mastodon. Dale Crover helped out Kurt Cobain in 1988, by playing drums for Nirvana on their ten song demo. Later this demo became part of their first album, Bleach. Dale later introduced Kurt to Dave Grohl, who would become the group’s long-term drummer. The band ??

8) The release of the song in the drug-fueled sixties led to many people assuming that anything with the word “X” was actually a reference to marijuana. This song really is about a growing up and abandoning an imaginary friend,a tale of lost childhood innocence. The song writers have maintained that the song has absolutely nothing to do with drugs. So, if you thought the song to actually have been about drugs, you almost certainly have already lost that childhood innocence referenced in the song.

9) HAL 9000: 2001,A space oddessey :: Mother : ?

10) In the early stages of development, ______ was a green-skinned, gilled monster with a girlfriend named Boma who was a cross between a guinea pig and a brown bear. _____ was supposed to make only a few appearances in the film, but the director later made him into a swashbuckling, reckless human who i totally adored in the movie.

11) The Man has taken on plenty of sinister criminals and organizations, but in a 1947 radio adventure, he went up against some very real and very frightening bad guys: the KKK. Journalist Stetson Kennedy had gone undercover in the Klan and on a lark, he then shared it with the creators of a radio show, who ran with it, pitting the the last son against the KKK. This did major damage to the klan and brought it down a notch. The man in question?

12) ‘The sound of a car crash is achieved by shaking a metal box filled with wood and metal scraps, the effect of fire by rapid opening and closing of an umbrella along with the crackle of thick cellophane’. This method was parodied in the film Monty Python and the holy grail, when due to budget restrictions the actors mimed riding a horse while banging coconut shells on screen. Whose job is it to create and record these natural, everyday sounds?

13) 17 year old Ronald Clements, when on trial for murder said that his actions were inspired in part by a magazine interview with a heavy metal star who said that “Anyone who knocked off a geek would be doing the world a favour”. He named his favourite song to be by the heavy metal band _________. The attorneys famously played the song in the courtroom.

Super Sixer – Last Resort

September 4th, 2009

Well, here are the last questions of this contest.
This will definitely set the cat among the pigeons. So try to send in your entries as early as possible to attain a higher position in the final standings.

Theme 1, last question

Identify this gentleman. He was part of a now common but then (during his prime) very exclusive club.
SS1.6

Answer: It turned out to be unintentionally tough.
The man is Harvey Firestone the founder of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. The club in question is the Millionaire’s Club which at the time had just three members including him

Theme 1 – Thomas Alva Edison

1. George Melies – Edison was as shrewd a businessman as a prolific inventor. In 1902, agents of Thomas Edison bribed a theater owner in London for a copy of A Trip to the Moon by Georges Méliès. Edison then made hundreds of copies and showed them in New York City. Méliès received no compensation. He was counting on taking the film to US and recapture the huge cost of it by showing it throughout the US when he realized it has already been showing in the US by Edison. This bankrupted Méliès

2. Google – the company was incorporated as Google Inc. on 4 September 1998 at a garage in Menlo Park, not the one in New Jersey but in California

3. Assasination of William Mckinley – We all know the famous story of how Alexander Graham Bell tried to help President Garfield when doctors couldn’t find a bullet lodged in his body. For those who don’t – Alexander Graham Bell devised a metal detector specifically for the purpose of finding the bullet, but the metal bed frame Garfield was lying on made the instrument malfunction. Because metal bed frames were relatively rare, the cause of the instrument’s deviation was unknown at the time.
There’s a similar story with respect to William McKinley’s death. Doctors couldn’t find a bullet lodged in his body. Thomas Edison arranged for an X-ray machine to be delivered all the way from his shop in New Jersey to help find the bullet, but it was never used as doctors did not know what side effects it might have on him
There are other connects as well – Edison made a lot of movies of McKinley.

4. Ruth Snyder’s execution – Connect is Electric Chair. It was the first commercial use of AC and was invented by Edison’s company. He wanted to make people believe that DC is safer than Tesla’s (far more superior) AC

5. AC DC – need I say anything

6. Harvey Firestone – The only two other members of the Millionaires club were Edison and Ford. The three were supposed to be great friends (and neighbors). There’s a famous photograph of the three taking an evening stroll in one of their estates.

Theme 2, last question

One half of each of the following
SS2.6a

God

Oh, by the way.. Answers to the previous Weekly on war and military have been put up. Hind them here

Answer: Mata Hari, Siv-Hari and Harihara(half vishnu half shiva) so the common half is Hari

Theme 2 – Foundation Series by Isaac Asimov

1. Star Wars -> Galactic Empire -> Foundation Series
2. Al Qaeda – Western observers sometimes state that Osama Bin Laden, the leader of the Al Qaeda terrorist organisation, may have been influenced by the novel in its formation as a method to expand Islamic fundamentalist influence, even extending to the name ‘Al Qaeda’, a translation of the word ‘Foundation’ into Arabic which otherwise has no natural direct counterpart in the language. Though I think it’s too far fetched.
But since Al Qaeda means Foundation, I thought I’ll give it as a clue

3. Hugo Awards – The series won the one-time Hugo Award for “Best All-Time Series” in 1966.

4. John W Campbell – The premise of the series is that mathematician Hari Seldon spent his life developing a branch of mathematics known as psychohistory, a concept devised by Asimov and his editor John W. Campbell.

5. Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – “The Guide” is a spoof of Foundation’s Encyclopedia Galactica, and the series actually mentions the encyclopedia by name, remarking that it is rather “dry,” and consequently sells fewer copies than the guide.

6. Hari – for Protagonist Hari Seldon

Do let us know how you felt about the themes. Also, let us know if you have better connects to relate the clues to the themes.

Breaking News – Super Sixer themes cracked!!

September 2nd, 2009

Yes, that’s right. Out of the blue, in came two darts. One almost a shot in the dark. And both found the bull’s eye!!

Appu, who until now had had a blow-hot-blow-cold run in the event, went into overdrive, shifted gears and has now pulled away from the rest of the pack. Great job Appu!!

It’s now upto his nearest competitors to narrow the gulf. Excellent show so far by Rithwik and Captain has ensured that the lead is not insurmountable. Appu has thrown in the kitchen sink, let’s see who comes in with the bath tub!!
